MIRI – Eight college students who went hiking up a mountain last night sparked a rescue operation when one of them suffered breathing woes.
The incident happened late last night about 3.7km up Gunung Bung Muan in Bau district, southern Sarawak.
The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department said in a statement today that the entire group was rescued successfully.
This included the 18-year-old teenage lad who had suffered from breathing difficulties, who had to be carried down the mountain on a stretcher by the search-and-rescue unit consisting of firefighters, Civil Defence Unit personnel and local villagers.
“A group of eight hikers made up of three ladies and five male youths went hiking up the mountain on Thursday. They are students of a college in Kuching.
“They were 3.7km up the mountain when one of them, a boy aged 18, suffered breathing difficulties. The group called for emergency help and the Sarawak Fire Department deployed a search team.
“The Civil Defence Unit and village folk at the base of the mountain joined in the operation.
“The rescue teams climbed for two hours and 30 minutes up the mountain before they located the victims,” said the statement.
The operation ended at around 10.30pm last night and the victims were safely brought down to a village at the foot of the mountain. – The Vibes, March 25, 2022
