KUALA LUMPUR – The National Union of Bank Employees (NUBE) has urged the government to implement recommendations made by the United Nations’ Committee on Freedom of Association as a bid to facilitate negotiations between the union and HSBC Malaysia.
NUBE secretary-general J. Solomon said the government has been asked to engage with involved parties to solve any outstanding issues concerning allegations of anti-union terminations or suspension of union members.
“This is to ensure that, where appropriate, adequate remedies are provided to concerned workers while reinstatement and compensation is allowed.
“More than 300 grievances and disputes with HSBC Malaysia have emerged in the last three years as a result of the inefficiency and failure of relevant government agencies to take action after multiple appeals by NUBE.”
In December 2020, NUBE had filed complaints against HSBC Malaysia over alleged unfair treatment towards bank workers and failure to respect labour laws and collective agreements signed in Malaysia.
Solomon alleged that the bank harassed, terminated and transferred staff under certain guises and forced workers to accept voluntary separation schemes without consulting the union. – The Vibes, April 1, 2022
