KUALA LUMPUR – The Transport Ministry has banned the use of mopeds, personal mobility devices and personal mobility aids on public roads effective today.

Its minister Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong said in a press conference that this includes electric scooters, devices with internal combustion engines, and human-powered transport.

He added that a moped is an electric-powered vehicle with two or three wheels that does not exceed a speed of 50km/h.

This comes under the Road Traffic (Prohibition of Use of Certain Microbility Vehicles) Rules 2021, which has been enforced since December 17.

“More and more micro-mobility vehicles are being used on the road. This can be a danger for other road users as well.”

He added that the micro-mobility vehicles can still be used but not on public roads and certain roads in residential areas.

“The ban does not include use of the micro-mobility vehicles indoors and on private land.”

Meanwhile, he said bicycles are still allowed on public roads, but cyclists have to adhere to the Road Transport Act and Road Traffic Rules.

He added that electric bicycles that meet Malaysia Standard MS2514: Electric Bicycles specifications are allowed on public roads. – The Vibes, April 26, 2022
