MIRI – Resort and hotel operators in Sarawak have been urged to carry out stringent safety checks on their facilities to ensure the safety of their guests.

Sarawak tourism minister Datuk Abdul Karim Hamzah made the call today in response to an incident at a resort in the Mulu National Park where four men were injured after a bridge linking blocks of guest rooms collapsed yesterday afternoon.

Karim, at a press conference in Kuching today, said these incidents at resorts need to be prevented.

“As we reopen to more visitors, resort and hotel operators must ensure safety of guests are prioritised.”

Meanwhile, he said the four injured in Mulu were on their inspection rounds when the bridge collapsed as they were crossing it.

The four injured were the resort general manager, duty chief and two general workers.

They sustained bodily and head injuries when they fell into the collapsed section after the wooden planks gave way.

All of them have been flown to the Miri Hospital for treatment. – The Vibes, April 27, 2022
