GEORGE TOWN – The prisoner who escaped police custody at the Bayan Baru central lock-up was rearrested in Kuala Kurau, Parit Buntar in Perak at 6pm yesterday.

Penang police chief Datuk Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said a team of 10 officers from various departments in his contingent was deployed to hunt down the escapee.

He told a press conference at the police headquarters here today that the escapee had no direction, nor had he planned his escape.

“I wish to thank a member of the public who alerted the police over the whereabouts of the escapee. However, he wanted to escape to obtain medical treatment for his skin allergy, which is quite bad.”

On Wednesday, six policemen were remanded for three days to assist in the investigation into the escape.

“We will conduct a detailed investigation into the incident if there is an element of negligence or the like,” Shuhaily added.

Shuhaily said in the midnight incident on Tuesday, a detainee known as Azizi Mohammad Hassan managed to escape from the lock-up.
