MIRI – The Covid-19 crisis in Sarawak is still a threat as the risk of being infected still exists in society.
Even though the authorities have relaxed many of the strict standard operating procedures (SOPs), it does not mean there are no more dangers of the virus, said Sibu Disaster Management Committee adviser Dr Annuar Rapaee.
Speaking during a Hari Raya gathering in Sibu district today, he said there are still people getting infected every day throughout Sarawak.
Dr Annuar, who is Nangka state assemblyman and deputy minister for education, innovation and technology development, said the remaining Hari Raya celebrations must be observed cautiously.
“We are seeing the biggest Raya gatherings for more than two years,” he said.
“There are big crowds in public and big family gatherings everywhere now.”
“It is good that we can celebrate openly now. However, the people must be reminded that Covid-19 is still infectious.
“It is still a serious threat, and the people must not get complacent and think that they do not need to take precautions anymore, like wearing face masks in public places,” he said.
Starting May 1, the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee no longer issues daily updates to the public on Covid-19 infections in the state and will only provide weekly updates henceforth.
“Only on Monday will we provide the statistics on Covid-19 cases, and it will no longer be practised every day,” he said.
“We have made this decision in light of the latest developments in the state where hospitalisation and ICU cases have been reduced,” the secretariat had said.
The secretariat, however, reminded the public to continue to observe due precautions on their own to keep infections away.
As for all other SOPs on mask-wearing and travelling procedures, the state authorities will follow all the national guidelines from the federal authorities, the secretariat said. – The Vibes, May 6, 2022
