KOTA KINABALU – Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s hour-long walkabout in Gaya Street at 9am was greeted by hundreds of people, with many wanting to take selfies with the Barisan Nasional (BN) adviser.

However, a few metres from the Gaya Street fair entrance, opposition members did a flash mob ahead of Najib’s visit.

About 20 people from the opposition parties gathered around 7.30am near Deasoka Square to voice their opposition over rising food prices and demanded the implementation of Sabah’s 40% revenue entitlement.

Among those who participated were Sabah PKR Youth information chief Razeef Rakimin, Sabah DAP Youth’s Desmond Chan and Sabah Muda chief Amos Thien.

Chan said their appearance was planned to coincide with Najib’s visit but assured that they had no intention of causing trouble.

“We gather here not to create trouble, but we know that a particular BN leader will be coming to Gaya Street.

“So, our presence here is to voice our opposition to a string of problems faced by the people,” he said during the flash mob, which dispersed after 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, Najib adjourned for breakfast with local community leaders at a nearby hotel after his walkabout.

Yesterday, he said he was not involved in giving out identification cards to undocumented migrants in the past.

This follows Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) president Datuk Seri Maximus Ongkili alleging that a BN component party gave MyKads to undocumented migrants in exchange for their votes.

During his tenure as prime minister, Najib formed a royal commission of inquiry on undocumented migrants in 2013.

After the inquiry was over, he appointed then PBS president Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan as chairman of the technical committee to look into resolving the problem in Sabah. – The Vibes, July 3, 2022
