A WOMAN driving a car found herself in a dangerous spot after her GPS guided her to a small, wooden suspension bridge over the Yom River north of Bangkok.
The left front wheel of the Honda City she was driving got stuck as the fragile bridge’s planks broke under the weight of her car.
According to reports in Thai news portals, the incident occurred on Monday at about 5.40pm, when the driver, from Nong Muang Khai district, was on her way to visit her friend in Sung Men.
The 120-metre bridge over the Yom River connects two villages in Tambon Wiang Thong in Sung Men district.
The 38-year-old driver fortunately managed to get out of her car and sought help from nearby residents.
Reports said police and rescue teams later used two tractors to pull her car back safely.
“I have never been to Wiang Thong before. My friend pinned a location for me in the GPS to cross what is called Wiang Thong Bridge so that I could reach the destination,” said the driver.
She said she followed the instructions on her GPS and did not notice another concrete bridge about 40 metres away.
“That’s why I got stuck on the bridge. I did not know that a new bridge had been built near the old one, which is only for pedestrians.
"I was so scared because I was in the middle of the Yom River. I was afraid the car might fall into the river,” she said.
A resident said the bridge was built about 40 years ago and is only suitable for small motorcycles and pedestrians.
He urged relevant authorities to put up clear warning signs to warn others. – The Vibes, January 31, 2024
