A STRAY dog was hailed as a hero in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district in India after she fought and killed a venomous snake that threatened a group of over 30 kindergarten students, ultimately losing her own life in the process.

The 8.30 am incident occurred earlier this week when the young children were playing outside the school premises when a venomous snake slithered dangerously close.

Before anyone could react, Kali (the dog) sensed something was wrong.

Without hesitation, she rushed toward the snake, placing herself directly between the danger and the children.

Despite being repeatedly struck, it continued to engage the snake, according to media reports.

The snake was eventually killed. However, the dog suffered a bite to its mouth and later died, with locals attributing its death to the venom.

The heartbreaking sacrifice has left the entire village in mourning. For the people there, Kali was no longer just a stray dog; she was a protector, a guardian.

In a rare and deeply emotional gesture, villagers came together to give her a farewell usually reserved for loved ones.

Her body was wrapped in white cloth, decorated with flowers, and taken in a funeral procession through the village. Many gathered to pay their respects, some in tears, remembering the life she gave to save others.

Today, Kali’s story is being shared far beyond her village, touching hearts and reminding people of a rare kind of bravery.

In protecting those children without a second thought, she proved that courage and loyalty can come from the most unexpected places. - April 26, 2026
