OTTAWA – A small submarine carrying tourists to legendary wreckage – the Titanic – has gone missing off the east coast of Canada, local media reported yesterday, reported Xinhua.
The submarine was reported missing after it was overdue by a couple of hours Sunday evening 370km off the coast of Newfoundland in the east of Canada, according to media reports.
It is not clear how many people were on board and a rescue operation is currently underway, reports said.
Although the expedition departed from Canada, the Titanic wreck lies within the jurisdiction of the US Coast Guard’s Boston fleet.
OceanGate Expeditions, a US-based company, ran the trip to the Titanic. It uses a five-person submersible named Titan to reach the wreckage 3,800m below the surface. OceanGate’s website advertises a seven-night voyage to the Titanic for US$250,000 (RM1.15 mil) per person with the money raised by tourists going towards Titanic research, local media reported. – Bernama, June 20, 2023
