META has apologised for removing content related to the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s Facebook and Instagram accounts

Malaysia had sought an explanation from Meta after the posts conveying condolences over Haniyeh’s death were taken down.

“We apologise for an operational error where content from the prime minister’s Facebook and Instagram pages was removed. The content has since been restored with the correct newsworthy label,” a Meta spokesman told Reuters in an emailed response.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil and members of the Prime Minister’s Office met Meta representatives on Monday to demand an explanation.

“The Prime Minister’s Office views Meta’s actions as discriminatory, unjust, and a blatant suppression of free expression,” the office said in a statement yesterday. – August 6, 2024
