KUALA LUMPUR – SMH Rail Sdn Bhd yesterday unveiled its latest locomotive series built with emission reduction technology.

Dubbed the H10 Series, these locomotives “can potentially replace 100 cargo trucks, reduce carbon emissions by up to 75%, lower highway congestion, and are four times more fuel-efficient than road freight transport on average”, the rolling stock manufacturer and maintenance specialist said in a statement.

The first batch will be delivered to Tanzania Railways Corporation, which received funding support from the World Bank.

“I am confident that these locomotives will bring enormous economic benefits to the African rail cargo industry. It is efficient in bridging connectivity, increases supply-chain access, accelerates industrialisation and promotes cross-border trade.

“With more than 60% of its content locally manufactured in Malaysia, the H10 Series marks a cornerstone achievement of our company in the global rail industry,” said SMH Rail chairman and managing director Datuk P.K. Nara.

The dual-cab H10 Series’ locomotive is compliant with International Union of Railways standards and is designed for heavy haulage and uninterrupted long-haul services.

One of its main features is its capability to operate in challenging terrains and weather conditions for combined performance assurance with high reliability and availability, SMH said.

H10 locomotives are equipped with remote monitoring and diagnostics solutions to remotely provide real-time updates to rail operators, including speed, maintenance needs, fuel consumption and fault alerts.

It also supports data analysis that tracks negligent handling, reduces risks of failures and improves operational safety. – The Vibes, August 21, 2021
