GEORGE TOWN – Budget carrier Firefly has resumed its operations here, flying to Johor Baru, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching starting yesterday.

The Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) said its subsidiary also marked its 15th anniversary since it first started operations in April 2007 and celebrated its resumption with a send-off event at Penang International Airport.

The inaugural flights were also welcomed with a water cannon salute at all the respective arrival airports while passengers were given souvenirs.

Firefly will run two daily return flights from Penang to Johor Baru, and one daily return flight from Penang to Kuching and Kota Kinabalu, respectively.

April 25 onwards, the carrier will increase its flights to thrice daily for Penang-Johor Baru and twice daily from Penang to East Malaysia.

MAG group CEO Captain Izham Ismail said in a statement that the company is looking forward to reinstate its pre-Covid operations as well as introduce new domestic and regional markets.

Meanwhile, Firefly CEO Philip See said Firefly is now in a rebound position where restrictions have eased as nations begin to live and travel despite Covid-19.

Sister carrier Malaysia Airlines recently increased services to its flagship Kuala Lumpur-London route, as well as reinstated commercial flights to India, Australia, and Thailand.

MAG is looking to achieve approximately 70% of its pre-Covid-19 capacity by the end of this year. – The Vibes, April 12, 2022
