KUALA LUMPUR – Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) has appointed Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad Abdul Majid as its chairman effective today.

The former managing director of Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd is currently advisor to GMR Airports Group, which manages airports in India and overseas, MRT Corp said in a statement today.

“As we consider future policies on public transport, their impact on the economy, and the rakyat’s well-being, Bashir Ahmad’s vast experience in responding to changing business models, economic regulatory affairs, and service delivery would come in very handy to MRT Corp in supporting our mission to catalyse sustainability of cities and mobility of people,” said chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Zarif Hashim.

Bashir Ahmad began his career in aviation when he joined Malaysia Airlines as a management trainee in 1972.

He worked at Malaysia Airlines for 29 years where he rose up the ranks to be the executive vice president.

He later served as Malaysia Airports managing director from 2003 to 2014 and subsequently as its advisor until 2017. – Bernama, April 3, 2023
