MALAYSIAN rapper and musician Namewee is not afraid to court public attention. His latest music takes aim at ‘political frogs’ – a term often used in Malaysia to refer to politicians who switch parties and loyalties.

Officially titled ‘A Song About Frogs in Malaysia’, the music video premiered on YouTube yesterday and has already garnered more than 200,000 views and 15,000 likes or ‘thumbs up’ (at time of publishing).

Perhaps most striking is a cameo by Muar MP Syed Saddiq, who joins in with the dancers and delivers a humorous speech towards the end.

“Frogs are protected species in Malaysia. They have a super high IQ and are extremely skillful in acrobatics like hopping and have an abundance of collagen, and most importantly they are very rich.

"Under the care of our beloved nation for years, frogs continue mating here and there without shame, reproducing and increasing their numbers rapidly over the years.

Syed Saddiq ends his speech with a rousing call, “everyone should remember that the frog is the national treasure of Malaysia. Please follow me in chanting 'Long Live Frogs! Long Live Frogs!'”

The music video also features collaborations with other artists such as 5Forty2 and MastaClan. The video has received positive feedback.

“Well done! Namewee – Ya, basically this song just for entertainment purpose but as Malaysian I do feel disappointed with some (speechless) leader in our country,” reads one comment left on YouTube.

“Respect him for being true to himself!! They could never take one’s conviction and hope away!,” YouTube user Chrisi wrote. – The Vibes, August 13, 2022
