‘RRR’ directed by SS Rajamouli creates history at the Golden Globe Awards by becoming the first Indian film to win the award for Best Original Song with its hit song ‘Naatu Naatu’.

Composed by music director MM Keeravaani and sung by Kala Bhairava and Rahul Sipligunj with lyrics by Chandrabose, the song beat out competition from heavyweights such as Taylor Swift and Rihanna.

The hit song was filmed in front of Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelensky's official residence in 2021.

Accepting the award, composer MM Keeravani said he was thrilled by the song's success.

RRR's win for Best Original Song at the Golden Globes has been widely recognised as a major achievement for the Indian film industry, as it marks the first time an Indian film has received such an accolade at the prestigious awards ceremony.

Back home, Indians are rejoicing the win. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the team over Twitter, calling it a “very special accomplishment.”

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan wrote on Twitter that he "woke up and started dancing to Naatu Naatu" to celebrate the news. Oscar-winning music composer AR Rahman called the win a "paradigm shift".

Drawing inspiration from the lives of freedom fighters Komaram Bheem and Alluri Sitarama Raju, RRR narrates a fictional tale set in the 1920s.

Written and directed by SS Rajamouli, RRR, which stands for Rise, Roar, Revolt, the film boasts an ensemble cast, starring the likes of Jr NTR, Ram Charan, Ajay Devgn, Alia Bhatt, Olivia Morris, Samuthirakani, Alison Doody, and Ray Stevenson.

One of India's most expensive films, the dazzling action epic has been a huge box-office success – not just domestically but also in countries such as the US. Hollywood actor Jessica Chastain praised it upon watching the film describing it as "such a party".

A Hindi-language version of the film on Netflix was among the platform's Top 10 most-watched titles in the US for weeks when it was released in May 2022. The film's director, SS Rajamouli, has also been widely praised for his vision and direction in creating a visually stunning and critically acclaimed film.

The win at Golden Globes is a huge step for Indian cinema and has put India on the world stage.

RRR was also nominated in the Best Non-English Language Film category at the Golden Globes, but lost to Argentina, 1985. – The Vibes, January 12, 2023
