ACCORDING to a report by Variety, Marvel’s Kevin Feige's untitled Star Wars film and Patty Jenkins' Rogue Squadron have been shelved and are no longer in active development.
The Star Wars franchise's attempt at a reboot since 2015 has been plagued by problems of creativity, dismissals of directors, and box office failures.
Despite the setback, Lucasfilm is still moving forward with other Star Wars projects. Taika Waititi is reportedly directing a Star Wars film and is expected to act in it as well, following his on-screen appearances in Thor: Ragnarok and Jojo Rabbit.
Additionally, there are rumors of a Star Wars film written by Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson, and directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, as well as a Star Wars trilogy from Rian Johnson, the director of The Last Jedi.
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has expressed interest in continuing to work with Rian Johnson, although he is currently occupied with the Knives Out sequels and tv show Poker Face, leaving his availability for a Star Wars project uncertain.
While Lucasfilm has yet to reveal its future theatrical plans, the studio has been investing heavily in Star Wars TV shows.
The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Andor have already been launched on Disney+, and several other shows are in the works, including Ahsoka, Skeleton Crew, and The Acolyte.
This leaves open questions about the future of the Star Wars franchise. Especially given that the next Disney release date for a Star Wars film is in December 2025, with no confirmed project to fill the slot.
It is possible that Johnson's long-gestating trilogy could occupy this date, but it is more likely that Taika Waititi's film will be released at that time.
With a six-year gap between The Rise of Skywalker and the next Star Wars film, the franchise is clearly suffering from a lack of cinematic content, despite the steady stream of television shows that Disney has been producing. – The Vibes, March 10, 2023
