THE Election Commission (EC) has formally received notification of the dissolution of the 15th Melaka Legislative Assembly, setting in motion the process for the state’s 16th election.
EC chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Datuk Harun said the commission received the official notification in a letter from Melaka Assembly Speaker Datuk Wira Haji Ibrahim Durum on Tuesday, with the dissolution taking effect today.
He said the dissolution was carried out under Clause (2) of Article 19 of the Melaka State Constitution.
“Based on Clause (4) of Article 19 of the Melaka State Constitution, a general election must be held within 60 days from the date of dissolution of the State Legislative Assembly,” he said in a statement.
The EC will convene a special meeting to determine key dates for the 16th Melaka state election, although the date of the meeting has yet to be announced.
The dissolution was earlier announced by Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh after obtaining the consent of Yang Dipertua Negeri Melaka Tun Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam.
With the EC now formally notified of the dissolution, the 16th Melaka state election will proceed to the next stage of the electoral process. - September 23, 2026
