WITH the themes of unity, courtesy, love. loyalty, respect, harmony and strong bonds, Eraser is a thoroughly Malaysian film that will premiere tomorrow on Prime Video.
Directed by Mark Lee See Teck, the film also bears the honour of being the late great actor Adibah Noor’s last film before her death on June 18 last year.
Fans who have missed Adibah’s nonchalantly heart-warming acting style will doubtless appreciate Eraser, which also stars Nam Ron, Angela Chan, Dhiya Ariffin and Alyssa Lee.
Eraser, or “pemadam” or “hapus” in Bahasa Melayu, holds deeper symbolism to be pondered upon by Malaysian audiences across all races.
The Malaysian flag eraser is made a metaphor for the slow ‘erasing’ of the country, for lack of unity.
Running at 94 minutes, the family romantic drama was written by Mark, Tang Yen Yen and Siti Jasmina Ibrahim.
It is the story of Malaysia which began with a broken family which held strongly to life. It also depicted conflicts where if racial tensions are left unchecked, it would be hard to engender unity among the people.
What made it more challenging was that Eraser was created during the pandemic.
“The restrictions and obstacles that we faced were producing Eraser at the height of Covid-19. We had to make sure all crew we in good health and practised stringent care so that there won’t be a cluster on set.
“Making a film during the pandemic greatly increases costs, including the 5 to 10% in spending to ensure everyone’s safety.
“But we are grateful because nothing untoward happened during our 20 days on set.”
The producer also reiterated that despite the restrictions, they believed that their hard work will pay off in the form of the final product.
Mark said the team did not face any problems changing the format of the film from a three-minute short to the current feature film length.
"Eraser is the story of a broken family's journey which survives because of undivided love despite different religious beliefs."
"It is proof with affection and love, regardless of gender, race or religion – humanity trumps everything," said Mark.
Eraser tells the story of Ahmad, the son of tombstone maker Azman, who dreams of easing his family’s burdens when Xiao Li, an abused girl, appears with her mother, Ah Yoke in their lives.
Ahmad's family accepted the two with open arms, providing shelter, but life was not easy for Xiao Li when she was bullied at school.
However, Xiao Li and Ahmad's lives changed after they took part in the National Art Competition that carried the theme of Vision 2020.
