WORKING nights and lack of focus are reasons for the increase in the number of candidates failing all subjects in the 2024 SPM examinations.
This was shared by Education Director-General Datuk Azman Adnan based on an early analysis of the results, today.
Based on records, 1,789 or 0.5 percent of SPM 2024 candidates failed all subjects including Bahasa Malaysia or History, making them ineligible for a certificate.
Apart from these factors, Azman said the MOE's initial analysis found that there were also a few candidates facing issues related to literacy and numeracy that were not addressed earlier, as well as a lack of support in terms of the learning environment at home.
"Like I mentioned, (the issue of) family has an impact on a student’s achievement," he said.
Meanwhile, Azman said the MOE would conduct a 'post-mortem' following the increase in the number of candidates failing all subjects to identify other significant factors causing their failure.
"Although overall the SPM 2024 showed significant improvements in various aspects, especially students' academic achievements, the MOE also takes seriously the increase in candidates who failed all subjects," he said.
Commenting on the measures being implemented, he said that among them is to enhance certain programmes to help ensure students are better prepared to face the SPM examinations this year.
"The Ministry is also making preparations in advance to ensure that the issue of student failure does not become a recurring issue," he added. – April 24, 2025
