KUALA LUMPUR – The transfer of a senior teacher by the Education Ministry has left parents and colleagues shocked, especially his Form 5 students who will be sitting for the SPM in about eight months.

Venkateswaran Ramiah, a teacher at St John’s Institution (SJI), has been moved to SMK Taman Setiawangsa after 18 years.

Popularly known as Sir Ven in the Johannian community, he has been praised for his dedication over the years and was awarded the Guru Adiwira prize by the ministry in 2019.

Isham Ishak, St John’s Alumni Association (SJAA) president and member of the school’s board of governors, said an appeal letter has been sent to the Education Department here and the Keramat education district office.

“As a Form 5 supervisor and unit head. Sir Ven teaches Mathematics and Additional Mathematics and has been in service in St. John’s Institution since 2003.

“The SJAA sees Sir Ven as a shining pillar, and since joining the school he has contributed significantly to the well-being of Johannians, past and present.

“His drive, intensity and dedication has inspired many Johannians to pursue, to strive and to achieve.

“Sir Ven will always be the first to stand and will be the last to leave when it comes to fundraisers, free extra classes and even giving motivational support to all in need.”

Meanwhile, Prabha, a parent, shared her disappointment on Facebook.

“I fail to see the logic of transferring a dedicated, experienced and committed teacher. Also, Sir Ven is teaching the SPM 2021 students and this transfer is being made in the middle of this critical time during exam preparations.”

This view was echoed by those who took to social media to vent their frustration.

Roslan Rosly said on the SJAA Facebook page that Venkateswaran is well liked.

“I only hear good things about Mr Ven. He has done a lot for my son and other students. Very well liked and very dedicated. SJI should keep him.”

Izzuddin Azam, on the same Facebook page, said the issue is not about having to adhere to the order to leave but the way Sir Ven was being asked to leave.

A group of students have put up a petition on Change.Org – Save Sir Ven, Save SJI – garnering more than 3,000 signatures at midnight.
