HULU LANGAT – It is a sorrowful sight as a 85-year-old man wheels himself to sit in front of his collapsed house in Kg Lembah Dusun Tua every day in an effort to get some help from volunteers, non-governmental organisations, or even passers-by.
Abdul Aziz Utih cuts a forlorn figure in his wheelchair as he looks to gain some attention to help his son Haslan clean up debris and mud left behind from the devastating floods that swept through the district.
So far, he has yet to catch a break – even though help has been pouring into the neighbouring Taman Sri Nanding and Kg Sg Lui. At most, he had been approached by backhoe operators looking to make a quick buck.
For now, he is hopeful that people will notice him sitting outside while Haslan tries to salvage what he can from the wreckage.
The aftermath left mud sticking to houses, vehicles, and belongings. The floods also destroyed part of the road that connects Dusun Tua to Sg Lui, creating a traffic bottleneck in the already poorly connected district.
Hard-to-access rubbish collection areas have resulted in open burning in Dusun Tua, as residents hope that it will deter pests and destroy mosquito breeding grounds.
