UP TO 300 delegates, mostly from China are attending the World Research Travel Organisation Malaysian Chapter event in Penang.

As part of the event, the delegates were also taken to the Chowrasta Market where they were given a  briefing on the landmark's history.

Organising officer, Mint Leong said while at the market, the delegates were exposed to Malaysian Indian cuisine and traditional board games.

The delegates are staying in hotels all over Penang and their presence is considered a huge boon for the state as it is now gaining a reputation among the Chinese as a must - see destination.

At the same time, state executive councillor for tourism Wong Hon Wai launched the International Conference of Butterfly Exhibitors and Suppliers at the Ascot Gurney Penang Hotel.

Up to 100 delegates from mostly North America, Europe, Australia and South America are attending the event.

Entopia Penang is the main organiser and the butterfly farm operator in Teluk Bahang is doing it for the third time.

Its chief executive officer Joseph Goh said that the conference brings huge mileage to tourism, as 99% of the delegates are foreigners.

"It will bring much exposure for Penang," he said.

Wong said that Penang has a unique cultural and natural heritage which was recognised by Unesco after George Town was proclaimed a World Heritage Site.
