Over 10 million devout Hindus gathered at the Kumbh Mela in northern India on Wednesday, taking part in a sacred ritual of immersion in the holy waters.
The ritual, near Lucknow, which spans four hours, occurred on Magh Poornima, one of the festival's most auspicious days. Authorities in Prayagraj, located in Uttar Pradesh state, were bracing for even more worshippers as the massive crowds continued to swell, making it one of the world’s largest human gatherings.
Prashant Kumar, the chief of police in Uttar Pradesh, described the overwhelming numbers, noting that on this single day, the population of the city exceeded that of many countries.
Reuters reported today that as millions poured into the city, infrastructure struggled to keep pace, leading to long delays and heavy traffic jams that stretched for kilometers.
Authorities had increased security measures, deploying more police personnel and placing air ambulances on standby to ensure safety amid the massive crowds.
The festival, held at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers, sees a continuous flow of worshippers throughout its six-week duration.
The Kumbh Mela’s significance is heightened this year, with Hindus believing that taking a holy dip in these waters absolves them of their sins and, for some, even offers liberation from the cycle of rebirth.
Despite the challenges, the festival continued unabated, with millions flocking to the riverbanks to perform the ritual.
On January 29, a stampede tragically claimed over 30 lives, underlining the risks of such a large-scale event.
Nevertheless, the Kumbh Mela drew many prominent figures, from politicians and celebrities to wealthy devotees, all eager to partake in the spiritual experience.
