THE Dounan Flower Market, located in Kunming, China, recorded a 5% increase in flower transaction volume in 2024, reaching 14.18 billion stems.

The market’s transaction value for the year totalled 11.57 billion yuan (US$1.61 billion), maintaining its leadership in both volume and value for 25 consecutive years.

Situated in the Chenggong district of Kunming, Yunnan Province, Dounan is not only Asia’s largest fresh-cut flower trading market but also the world’s second-largest, Bernama- Xinhua reported.

It plays a vital role in the flower trade, with its products reaching every provincial-level region across China and over 50 countries and regions worldwide, including Japan and Thailand.

Flower cultivation in Dounan dates back to 1983, and in the 1990s, local residents began commercial cultivation and trading. In 1999, the first professional flower trading market in China was established in Dounan.

Since then, the market has expanded its flower industry chain, cementing its position as a major global flower trading hub. Currently, seven out of ten fresh-cut flowers in China are sourced from Dounan.

Dounan’s flourishing flower industry underscores China’s growing prominence in the global flower market.

With approximately 1.5 million hectares dedicated to flower cultivation and over five million people employed in the industry, China has become the world’s largest flower producer, as well as a key flower trader and consumer.

According to a guideline issued by China’s National Forestry and Grassland Administration and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, annual sales in China’s flower industry are projected to reach 300 billion yuan by 2025, with expectations for this figure to exceed 700 billion yuan by 2035. - February 23, 2025
