ABOUT a year ago on November 11, Toyota Thailand launched a rather interesting compact vehicle – the Yaris Cross. Looking like the bestselling Yaris hatchback with a raised height of about 30mm, larger 16-inch wheels and some SUV inspired trim all around the vehicle, this was Toyota’s answer to a growing demand in the crossover segment.
This Yaris comes equipped with Auto engine start/ stop feature, while the engine is paired to a Super CVT-i automatic. Additional equipment including a new 6.7-inch touchscreen with a front and rear video recorder included. In terms of safety, ABS/EBD/BA, VSC, Hill Start Assist and seven airbags (front, side, curtain, driver’s knee) are available as standard safety equipment.
For the Thai buyer, Toyota Thailand has revised the engine offering to a 1.2 litre 3NR-FKE four-cylinder engine instead of the 3NR-FE. Although the displacement remains the same but the Dual VVT-i has been upgraded to Dual VVT-iE, while the compression ratio is now 13.5:1, which is up from the previous 11.5:1. Output figures are also improved from 86hp and 108Nm to a more entertaining 92hp and 109Nm.
This Yaris was launched in Thailand in order to comply with more stringer Eco Car Phase-2 regulations in Thailand. Eco Car Phase-2 requires vehicles to be more fuel efficient as well as lower emissions than the Phase-1.
Malaysians are also finding crossover vehicles more to their taste, with the quick remark "good for driving in floods" and "we can use this vehicle for our outdoor lifestyle activity". Well, you and I know that most people who buy and own SUVs and even pickup trucks never even climb a curb or take to a dusty trail. Their ‘lifestyle’ needs see little use of a high riding vehicle. This is more in keeping with the needs of ‘fashion’ and what the others are driving. It's a follow-the-herd buyer’s mentality.
Then months into ownership, when the large and wide tyres need to be changed, there is anger on the cost of these bigger tyres on their crossover when compared to the tyres that were on their previous vehicle, a compact car. Still, this Yaris Cross will find buyers here in Malaysia with its trendy looks and well-equipped cabin.
In Thailand, this Yaris Cross is selling from 574,000 baht to 684,000 baht which is about RM77,394 to RM92,226 making a viable rival to our Malaysian national car offerings right now.
There is still no confirmation on its arrival in Malaysia and its possible selling price. – The Vibes, December 21, 2020
