TRANSPORT Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook recently disclosed plans for a new waterfront landmark which will stretch over 1km from the Esplanade to the Tanjong Marina in Penang.

It is a grand design by the ministry to ensure the new landmark is established within the next five years, said Loke, who last year played an integral role in bringing the Mutiara Light Rail Transit (LRT) project to Penang.

He stated that the redevelopment of the heritage waterfront would be undertaken in stages through the Port Commission and its operator, Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB).

Penang Port Commission (PPC), the port regulator, would oversee the Tanjong Marina Club area and the Railways Assets Corporation (RAC) building across the marina.

PPSB will oversee the godowns next to the Swettenham Cruise Pier Terminal, as well as upgrading the terminal down to the stretch next to the Esplanade.

Among the suggestions which Loke is keen to tap are the conversion of the RAC building into a boutique hotel and the redevelopment of the waterfront area with a quality pathway lined with cafes and retail.

"As the port is under the (Unesco World) heritage site, we need to be careful in the development facet. There is no wholesale construction but a delicate setup of amenities to blend in with the heritage confinements."

Loke also urged the residents to be patient as the rollout of the LRT begins.

He said that the contractors have been directed to conduct continuous traffic mitigation measures to alleviate the congestion around the construction sites.

PPC is also marking its 70th anniversary celebrations this year, which Loke launched at the E & O Hotel.

Around 70 events would be held to mark the occasion throughout the year.

Loke also saw the upgrading of the Rapid Penang stage public bus service, where 75 additional buses have joined the fleet servicing both the island and the Prai mainland.

On the proposed water taxi services, Loke acknowledged the shortcomings, as there are no visible jetties to serve the proposed routes.

He welcomed requests for proposals for the water taxi concept, which, if implemented effectively, may help alleviate the road congestion in Penang. - January 13, 2026.
