THE price of gold in the local market has recorded a sharp decline within a week, prompting people in Kelantan to flock to jewellery shops, despite having just celebrated Aidilfitri.

Based on a Sinar Harian survey, the price of gold at 916 per gram on March 15 was recorded at RM607.72, before starting to decline sharply a few days later.

On March 18, the price dropped to RM598.89, followed by RM584.19 on March 19.

The price continued to decline to RM539 on March 23 and RM525.73 on Tuesday.

On average, each decrease is about RM14, making the total decrease in a week around RM82.

Some Kelantan residents see the decline in gold prices as an opportunity to buy gold at a lower price.

Housewife, Raja Azizah Raja Yusoff, 58, said she is not worried about the fluctuations in gold prices but instead takes the opportunity to continue to increase her savings during low prices.

On average, each decrease is about RM14, making the total decrease in a week around RM82.

"I found out the price of gold was down when I followed developments on social media,” she said.

Civil servant, Siti Rahayu Mohd Taib, 45, expects the drop in gold prices will not last long and the price will increase again at any time.

She, who lives and works in Dungun, Terengganu, also took advantage of the Raya holidays to buy gold when the price was low.

"I still have money saved because I celebrated Aidilfitri in moderation and without waste.

“The Raya holidays with cheap gold are the right time to take the opportunity to buy,” she said.

Meanwhile, jewellery shop worker Nurin Azman, 27, said that the huge drop in gold prices is a strange and rare situation.

“Usually, when foreign countries are at war like this, gold will go up. Before last Syawal, there were already many people buying, and now that gold is down, more people are coming to get gold,” she said. – March 25, 2026
