 PENANG launched a STEM-Pulse initiative with the aim of overcoming the acute shortage of engineers by making technical subjects hip and enticing.

The state reportedly faces an estimated shortage of around 60,000 skilled engineers and technical personnel to support its booming semiconductor and electrical and electronics (E&E) industries.

STEM- Pulse, according to Deputy Chief Minister II Jagdeep Singh Deo, is designed to inspire students to explore careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in line with the Penang Future Engineers Immersion Programme.

The event, held at the lecture hall at Methodist Boys’ School, gathered 150 upper-secondary students for hands-on exposure to robotics, artificial intelligence, and modern engineering practices.

The programme is jointly organised by the Penang Educational Unity Association (EdUnite Penang), Universiti Tenaga Nasional (Uniten), educationist groups - IET Uniten on Campus, and the Mobile Robotics Club Uniten.

Jagdeep emphasised Penang’s pivotal position as the nation’s premier industrial hub, hosting over 2,500 multinational corporations and more than 7,500 small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

 “In Penang, we require at least 60,000 technicians and engineers to satisfy the demands of our thriving technology and manufacturing sectors as we head toward 2030,” Jagdeep said.

He urged students to seize the learning opportunities provided by the programme, highlighting that education and dedication are key to unlocking future potential and securing high-value technical careers in the state.

 “Our children are not just the future; they are a trust given to us that we must nurture and empower starting today,” he added.

The STEM-Pulse programme focuses on moving beyond theoretical classroom learning by providing experiential modules in automation, artificial intelligence, semiconductor concepts, and problem-solving skills to cultivate young innovators and future technology leaders. - September 11, 2026.
