KUALA LUMPUR – A young social activist pledged to provide free food for Indian students in the local universities during the two week nationwide lockdown that started today.

L. Theyaagu, 30, a pharmacist now self-employed, said he distributed 50 packets of food to the students in Universiti Malaya yesterday and he expects the list to grow longer today as he received a lot of calls seeking the food packets.

“Our list has grown longer today as we received request from 80 students in Universiti Malaya, 35 from Universiti Malaysia Pahang, 30 from Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 25 from Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin and also from private colleges.

“We have also received request from students at Universiti Sains Malaysia, Adventist Hospital’s nursing school and Politeknik from Merlimau, Melacca, We expect the list be more than 150 by the end of the day,” he said.

He said he receive funds from well wishers and donors for the program.

Thiagu said he continued to receive calls when his free food for the students became viral in social media.

“We have about 20 student volunteers in Kuala Lumpur and students in other universities outside Kuala Lumpur form their own groups to assist us in the program and we expect the list to grow further.

“We understand the plight of the university students during the movement control order and the standard operating procedure and we are willing to help them in need,” he said.

Theyaagu can be reached at 016-6285288 and those in Penang who wish to get the free food packets can contact Penang Hindu Association president P. Murugiah at 016-4449246. – The Vibes, June 1, 2021
