KUALA Lumpur city centre will be completely closed in conjunction with the 47th ASEAN Summit, said Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.
He said that 16,000 policemen from across the country are involved to assist and ensure smooth traffic flow.
According to him, the police will also be on high alert from 23 to 28 October.
"The police will mobilise approximately 16,000 personnel from across the country, especially from states bordering Kuala Lumpur starting 23 October to assist and ensure smooth traffic flow.
"Kuala Lumpur city centre will be completely closed and the police will not compromise on security," he said.
Malaysia, as the ASEAN Chairman, will hold a summit from October 26 to 28.
Mohamad also announced that the presidents of Brazil, South Africa and several other world leaders will be present as ASEAN Sectoral Dialogue Partners.
The Rembau MP added that Cyprus and Finland are also expected to become new ASEAN dialogue partners.
It was reported that around 70 schools would switch to online class sessions while civil servants working about 25 kilometres (KM) from the city centre were asked to work from home for the duration of the summit.
United States (US) President Donald Trump is also expected to attend the summit, but details on the dates of his stay in the country are not yet known.
Earlier, the Kuala Lumpur Command and Control Centre (KLC3) said that several main roads and highways in the capital would be closed in stages from October 26 to 28.
The road closures would be implemented periodically for between 30 and 45 minutes to make way for the movement of the highest-level official convoy throughout the conference period.
Following this, the public is advised to avoid the area and encouraged to use public transport such as the MRT, LRT, monorail or bus, and heavy vehicles are not allowed to enter the city centre during peak conference hours.
Among the main roads affected around the Kuala Lumpur city centre include Jalan Ampang, Jalan Sultan Ismail, Jalan P. Ramlee, Jalan Pinang, Jalan Binjai, Persiaran KLCC, Jalan Tun Razak, Jalan Parlimen, Jalan Bukit Bintang, Jalan Imbi, Jalan Damansara, Jalan Istana, Jalan Kuching and Jalan Perak.
In addition, among the strategic road junctions expected to be affected are Jalan Ampang-Jalan P Ramlee, Jalan Sultan Ismail-Jalan P Ramlee, Jalan Perak-Jalan P Ramlee, Jalan Perak-Jalan P Ramlee, Jalan Perak-Jalan Pinang, Jalan Stonor-Jalan Kia Peng and Jalan Stonor-Persiaran KLCC.
Also affected are routes from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and Subang to the city centre as well as main roads such as the Putrajaya Ring Road and the KLIA Highway, which will also be temporarily closed to make way for official convoys.
Major highways also involved include the Maju Expressway (MEX), the North-South Expressway (PLUS) from Sungai Buloh to Jalan Duta, the ELITE Expressway (KLIA–Putrajaya), the New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE) from Subang to Jalan Duta, the Guthrie Corridor Expressway (Guthrie) and the KL-Seremban Expressway (Sungai Besi to the city centre). – October 14, 2025
