THE Malaysian automotive industry is going through a good recovery considering all the issues from Covid-19 and the economic slowdown. However, it might not last. When the financial aid from the government slows down and the tax discount ends, very soon things could move in the opposite direction. Meanwhile, you have just a few more weeks before the current on-going car sales tax discount ends, and here are 7 reasons why you should consider buying a car before that period ends.

1. Safe space

Car showrooms are some of the easier retail premises to accommodate social distancing. They are generally spacious with more than enough space between cars and can easily allow measures such as one-way walkways, shielding, and contactless transactions.

2. Retailers are ready

Car dealers have been preparing their re-opening following the strict guidelines from the Ministry Of International Trade and Industry (MITI). New cleaning, disinfecting and test-drive processes, appointment systems and showroom layouts will keep customers and staff safe, helping get Malaysia back on the move.

3. Supporting jobs

The Malaysian automotive retail industry employs thousands of hard working Malaysians, who together work to drive a sector worth more than a billion ringgit a year.  Surviving car dealerships now will accelerate the market’s recovery, help return the sector to profitability more quickly and reduce the risk of job losses and the closure of automotive supporting industries like window tinting, car coating, tires, accessories and so on.

4. Boosting the economy

Automotive retail, including after-sales services, generates a circulation of money within the industry and boosts consumer confidence - and new car sales can help get the economy going in these challenging economic times.

5. Helping people back to work safely

The government is encouraging people who cannot do their jobs from home to return to work if they can, and where possible, to travel by private transportation if they cannot walk or cycle. This is to avoid overcrowding on buses and trains. For many, this makes access to a car or a scooter more important than ever.

6. Customer demand

Many people were unable to take delivery of new vehicles or shop around as their car finance agreements came to an end before lockdown, and re-opening showrooms will allow this demand to be fulfilled. Further research suggests that many drivers who don't own a car are now thinking about getting one to help them make essential journeys safely.

7. Technology and choice

There are dozens of new car models to choose from in the many Malaysian car showrooms to suit all budgets, tastes and driving needs, with even some full electric vehicle options from new to used. Keeping car showrooms open will help car brands to continue to introduce the latest fuel saving vehicles which will allow the next generation of Malaysian car buyers to make the switch to these leaner, greener vehicles while also benefiting from the latest cutting-edge safety and infotainment tech.  – The Vibes, November 2, 2020
