KUDAT – When it comes to insects, many people are repulsed by the sight of them. But there are also who find them fascinating.
In a bid to woo budding entomologists or those who take an interest in the creepy crawlies, the state museum is holding an exhibition on the small world of insects here, in the northernmost part of Sabah.
Sabah Museum director Arif Abd Hamid said the exhibition is held in conjunction with World Museum Day, on Wednesday.
"The small world of insects exhibition is one of our activities designed specifically for the northern parts of Sabah, as well as to promote tourism in this district.
“It is also a way to promote this new museum, the Tun Mustapha Museum, which opened in March last year,” he said when met after the launch of the exhibition here recently.
According to Arif, Kudat is on the verge of transforming into a tourism hub. Such an exhibition would certainly add value to the local tourism activities in the district.
“I am confident we would be able to woo more visitors into Kudat as the district is famous for its local beaches like Simpang Mengayau and others,” he said.
Meanwhile, Kudat District Officer Bakri Nanun said he also hope the district’s transformation into a tourism hub would be a success given that Kudat is one of the eight poorest districts in Sabah.
“Kudat is the first State capital of North Borneo, and it is also the birthplace of former Sabah chief minister Tun Mustapha Datu Harun.
“The site of this museum was itself mooted by Mustapha and the area was flattened during his time to set up a museum,” he said.
Meanwhile, Arif said all entry into museums in Sabah was free of charge in conjunction with the World Museum Day.
He said Sabah has the Tun Mustapha Museum in Kudat, Agnes Keith Museum in Sandakan, Bukit Tengkorak Museum and the Tun Sakaran Museum in Semporna, the Antanum Museum, and the Lumuyuh Rock Carving Information Centre in Tenom. – The Vibes, May 20, 2022
