ZOO Negara Malaysia is asking for public support to help recoup funds to sustain its operations and the well-being of the animals under its care.
The zoo’s closure since the conditional movement control order (CMCO) was imposed has made it difficult to meet its monthly operating costs of RM1 million.
Its partnership with Ticket2u in the ‘Adopt an Animal’ campaign encourages Malaysians to donate and support the zoo directly by putting up all animals for adoption.
Participating donors will also receive a certificate of adoption for their efforts in helping maintain the annual food, enrichment, and veterinary care needs.
During the early stages of the movement control order (MCO), Zoo Negara (under the Malaysian Zoological Society) was able to pay for the upkeep of 5,137 animals through the 'Adopt an Animal' programme.
Zoo Negara zoology, veterinary and Giant Panda Conservation Centre director Dr Mat Naim Ramli said the government helped many zoos during the first wave of the pandemic, but the zoo has yet to receive any aid since the third wave hit, which resulted in the CMCO that began on October 14.
