A TOTAL of 88% of Malaysians are smartphone users. There is a growing trend among users who are using their devices for other functions such as photography.
But photography is an art that needs mastering, which is why Vivo Malaysia have teamed up with Ian Teh, a British-Malaysian photographer and Pulitzer Centre 2018 Grantee, to put together three mobile photography tips for users to try out with their Vivo V20 series.
Play with the Rule of Thirds
The rule describes a basic compositional structure where the photographer splits the photograph into nine segments, using two horizontal and two vertical lines to position the subject. The positioning of the subject may vary, with some suitable to be placed at the focal point in the centre while some are placed off-centre at one of the intersecting points of the imaginary lines. And with the 64MP main camera and 8MP secondary camera available in the vivo V20 Pro and V20, users are assured that their photos will not only be aesthetically pleasing but also rich and vibrant in colour.
Explore angles and position of the subject
Create a sense of depth in the photographs. This tip works best for photographing landscapes. Similar to the Rule of Thirds, the smartphone user is required to strategically position the subject at the foreground of the photograph. This allows an emphasis on the distance in the photograph, while providing viewers with a sense of scale and allowing them to feel that the photograph was taken from their point-of-view.
The super wide-angle feature available in the V20 series provides a panoramic view, with the available aperture settings suitable to keep the foreground and background sharp. In addition, it provides users with a 120-degree view, dismissing the need to step back to take a photograph.
Control aperture, shutter speed and ISO
These three settings are often complementary of one another, as aperture and shutter speed affect the amount of light that comes into the camera. ISO settings, on the other hand, manipulate the amount of light needed to provide the correct exposure. Understanding these three settings will help capture sharper and clearer photographs, whether it is during the day or at night.
Teh said: “It’s usually the details that make the story. Sometimes, it is the finest details that complete a picture. This is why it is important to find ways to bridge that distance.” – The Vibes, November 20, 2020
With these tips, users can be sure to capture the beauty of everyday moments, all through the power of mobile photography. For details on the vivo V20 series, visit https://www.vivo.com/my/products/v20.
