FEDERAL Territory Day is a public holiday celebrated on February 1st by residents of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan, and Putrajaya, marking the day when these territories came under the control of the federal government.

But what exactly is a federal territory and how did Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya come to be federal territories?

A federal territory is a district that is under the direct control of the federal government, rather than being under the jurisdiction of a state government. The concept of federal territories was established to ensure the smooth functioning of government operations in areas deemed of national significance.

The history of Federal Territory Day dates back to 1974 when Kuala Lumpur was formally removed from the state of Selangor and became a federal territory. This change was brought about after the Constitutional amendment, which required the permission of the Selangor State Legislative Assembly and the Conference of Rulers.

Due to this amendment, a small part of Selangor was given to the Federal Government, thus forming the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur.

Subsequently in 1984, Labuan Island became a federal territory followed by Putrajaya in 2001.

Despite the establishment of Federal Territory Day, there are still some people who refuse to celebrate due to the political implications of the formation of these federal territories.

For example, the formation of the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur changed the representation of MPs and the number of voters in Selangor, leading to allegations of 'gerrymandering.'

Despite the controversies, Federal Territory Day remains an important day for the residents of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan, and Putrajaya, as it is a day to celebrate the rich history and heritage of these territories and to acknowledge the contributions their communities made to Malaysia's growth and development.
