OSCAR winner Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh will be returning home to Malaysia for the first time since her historic achievement at the 95th Academy Awards recently.

The ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ star is scheduled to appear for a public meet-and-greet session.

The “Pride of Malaysia Michelle Yeoh Homecoming Public Fan Meet” event will take place on April 18 at 4pm at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur.

All members of the public are welcome to attend the meet-and-greet session, and no prior registration is required.

Yeoh is also scheduled to join a private concert to commemorate her mother’s birthday on the same night.

During her acceptance speech, Yeoh dedicated her historic win to her mother Datin Janet Yeoh.

“She’s 84 and I’m taking this home to her,” she said.

Her Oscar victory capped a successful award season for the 60-year-old actress, who also won the Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild, and Independent Spirit Awards.

For her achievements, she was praised by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who called her “a source of great inspiration.”

"In creating history by being not just the first Malaysian but the very first Asian actress to win in this category, we take enormous pride in her achievement, adding to a long list of successes and capping a critically acclaimed acting career spanning decades,” the prime minister said in a statement.

The statement added, “coupled with this latest accomplishment, Michelle’s illustrious and exemplary career in this field will certainly continue to be a source of great inspiration and motivation to our homegrown actors and actresses and provide even greater impetus to the growth of our local industry.”

However, many Malaysians have also voiced their frustration and criticism against the government for its hypocrisy in celebrating her win while not doing more for the local film industry.

Ironically, the Oscar-winning Best Picture ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ had scenes censored in Malaysian cinemas.

During the same period as Yeoh’s Oscar win, the filmmakers and cast of ‘Mentega Terbang’ were investigated by the police and became victims of harassment and death threats.

The film was subsequently pulled from the streaming platform Viu.

It has yet to be revealed whether the prime minister or other dignitaries will be in attendance at the meet-and-greet session, but her return home is certain to be a high-profile event. – The Vibes, April 4, 2023
