THE controversial dismissal of a crucifix-wearing worker was raised in Dewan Rakyat today by former human resources minister M. Kulasegaran.
The Ipoh Barat MP questioned whether the government had taken any action on this as there were provisions in the Employment Act related to such dismissals.
“If no action has been taken, the relevant authorities should act on it immediately,” he said when debating the Budget 2024 Bill.
The former minister said there was a need for the government to address racial and religious discrimination.
Internet users continued to sympathise with the employee whose sacking was seen as a case of unfair dismissal and religious discrimination.
Taking to Instagram, prominent lawyer-cum-human rights activist Siti Kasim did not mince words in calling the whole episode unwarranted and stupid.
“What is the problem with the worker using a symbol to express his religious belief? What connection is that with the food?
“Why did the employer sack him? This is an offence. I suggest the worker sue the employer.
“By right, the employer should have spoken up and said the food sold has nothing to do with what the worker is wearing,” she said.
Siti said the action taken by the employer was tantamount to discrimination and unfair dismissal.
“Get a lawyer and sue the employer. You can also look for me if you want,” she advised the sacked employee.
Earlier today, former MCA vice-president Ti Lian Ker said Malaysians should come together to call out injustices by ignorant, self-centred people who did not appreciate strong multiculturalism in the country.
Yesterday, Bandar Kuching MP, Dr Kelvin Yii said he was deeply concerned about the level of racial and religious tolerance in the country, which could be a threat to national unity and harmony. – The Vibes, November 22, 2023
