FLOODWATERS have reached waist level in interior northern Sarawak, but politicians have not opened relief centres or emergency food-aid bases, activist Willie Kajan said.

Kajan, who is a tour leader, told The Vibes today many were stranded by floods.

“The rain is getting heavier and the floods have already covered the first floors of many longhouses, yet villagers have not gotten any instructions on where the nearest relief centres are,” he said.

Kajan also said food aid has not been distributed.

Folk were getting help from the Civil Defence Unit and Fire and Rescue Department to move their belongings to higher ground.

But politicians need to give directions on relief centres and food supplies, he said.

He said representatives seem to have been caught off guard by the flash flood.

Kajan said updates from his contacts in Baram and Mulu indicated the weather may worsen.

The latest information today from the Civil Defence Unit showed floods were inundating the districts of Ulu Teru, Marudi, Subis and Niah.

The flood situation in northern Sarawak has gone from bad to worse since Friday following a torrential downpour.

Northern Sarawak has been affected by the inter-monsoon – a prelude to a full-scale “landas”, which is the equivalent of the peninsular monsoon season. – The Vibes, November 26, 2023.
