A STATEMENT from the Pardons Board on Datuk Seri Najib Razak's application for a royal pardon following his conviction on corruption charges and a 12-year prison sentence is expected this week.
"Just be patient and wait for the official statement from the Pardons Board ... it will come later. Just be patient,” Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Dr Zaliha Mustafa said after launching the 50th Federal Territories Day in Putrajaya.
However, she did not specify when the statement would be released.
Yesterday, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said that the Cabinet has been briefly informed about the issue of the former prime minister's pardon application.
According to him, the matter was deliberated upon briefly at the Cabinet meeting yesterday as it does not fall under its ambit.
"We understand that this is under the (Pardons Board) because the pardon (process) is in the Constitution," he said.
"So we did discuss (regarding Najib's bid) but we understand that this is under the jurisdiction of the Pardons Board itself," he said during a media conference at the Home Ministry headquarters in Putrajaya.
Amid the frenzy of speculation on Najib, who is in prison due to a corruption conviction, most news outlets are awaiting the Pardons Board's official statement on the matter. - The Vibes, February 1, 2024
