SARAWAK will construct a network of floating solar power generation projects throughout the state’s northern districts of Limbang and Lawas, next to the state’s Sabah and Brunei borders.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan said the northern part of this state sees hot and sunny spells that are excellent for electricity generation via floating solar power systems.

“The Northern Sarawak districts of Limbang and Lawas and also Miri have great potential to produce electricity.

“The hot sunny weather is a great source for floating solar projects that can be built on rivers and lakes.

“These floating solar power projects can be constructed fast and the electricity generated can power longhouses and kampungs in the local areas surrounding the floating solar power locations.”

He said this can be the solution for rural electricity plans to provide power for those communities living outside of the main electricity grid, he told reporters in Lawas after a community gathering.

Awang Tengah said such a plan for extensive floating solar power projects is already being studied comprehensively by Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB).

SEB is a state government-owned electricity management company in charge of the hydroelectric dams in Sarawak, the largest of which is the Bakun Dam in Belaga district. – April 3, 2024
