THE Penang Malay Association (Pemenang) today urged the “ummah” to stop the polemics surrounding the socks issue but instead focus on reviving the economy.

Its president Tan Sri Mohd Yussof Latiff said Malaysians should stay the course of collectively wanting a progressive nation.

“And this can be achieved by cooperating with the government to revive the economy, which has been struggling to recover following the Covid-19 pandemic,” the 93-year-old Yussof said.

Pemenang has also called for the formation of a national Madani economic advisers council (MPEKM) to aid the government to grow the economy.

He suggested the following veteran personalities to be part of MPEKM: Tun Musa Hitam, Tan Sri Tengku Razaleigh Tengku Mohd Hamzah, Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz, Tan Sri Ramon Navaratnam, Tan Sri Abdul Wahid Omar, Tan Sri Sulaiman Mahbob,  Tan Sri Prof Kamal Salih, Datuk Hasan Mad and Prof Jomo Kwame Sundaram.

“Such economic luminaries can assist the Madani government in drawing up sound policies and gaining widespread public support to implement them,” Yussof said.

Yussof also said Muslims should curtail their emotions regarding the socks issue during Ramadan and instead focus on the virtues of patience, abstinence and fasting during the holy month of Ramadan.

“Muslims need not be too emotional until the issue is taken out of context,” he said.

“It is now in court with the Attorney-General’s Chambers charging the founder of KK Mart and his wife under their holding company of KK Supermart & Superstore Sdn Bhd.”

He said the group agreed with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim that the country needs to move on by allowing justice to take its course.

Pemenang was formed in 1927 and is said to be the country’s oldest Malay organisation. – The Vibes, April 8, 2024.
