TOMB raiders have struck a graveyard in the remote Song district in central Sarawak, about four hours by boat from Sibu town.

Song district police chief Deputy Supt Rowney Michael said today that since Wednesday, two separate native cemeteries with new and old coffins were desecrated.

These tombs belonged to Iban communities living along Sungai Engkabau, he said.

"The reports were from local villagers who found concrete tombs that contained coffins were broken into.

"The personal belongings of the deceased were found stolen," he said in a press statement.

It is a usual practice for some native communities to bury personal belongings like jewelleries along with the deceased.

Police are still gathering information from the family members on the items that had been stolen by the tomb-robbers at Sungai Engkabau.

In Sarawak, there are certain gangs of robbers that target victims who are already dead and buried!

These macabre robbers ply their gruesome activities during the small hour, breaking open tombstones and desecrating coffins with rotting or rotted corpses to steal jewelleries buried with the dead.

There have been many cases of such macabre nature in Sarawak, with some cases of skulls being stolen as well! – May 24, 2024.
