FINANCE Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan will soon explain more about the implementation of the diesel subsidy rationalisation, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Speaking at a press conference at the Postnormal Times Madani Exhibition in Kuala Lumpur, he said he was just giving an overview, while Amir will explain the matter soon.

“Some people ask why? Not all prime ministers do it. I give the big picture and framework, then there will be follow-up action.

“I distinguish between policy matters and details,” he said.

Opposition leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, who is also the Perikatan Nasional secretary-general, had earlier criticised Anwar for not stating exactly when the fuel subsidies would commence.

Last Tuesday, the cabinet agreed to implement the targeted diesel subsidy, saving the government around RM4 billion a year.

On another matter, Anwar said the government has decided who the next Election Commission (EC) chairman will be.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the government will adhere to the due process needed for the appointment, including obtaining consent from Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia.

“It has been finalised. We will follow the process and will need the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s consent for the appointment,” he said today after an event in Kuala Lumpur.

The position of EC chairman fell vacant on May 9 when Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh retired upon reaching 66 years of age.

On May 25, EC deputy chairman Azmi Sharom said the appointment process of EC commissioners and officers should be transparent as the current process is shrouded in secrecy and opaque practices.

Anwar said Azmi’s concerns are understandable.

“We don't consult the EC deputy chairman (on appointments). We have to go through due process,” added Anwar. – May 26, 2024
