RETIRED academic Joohari Ariffin was selected by Pakatan Harapan (PH) as its candidate for the Sungai Bakap state by-election in Penang.

The 60-year-old used to teach in Nibong Tebal and was active in many social and charitable activities.

A by-election was called after first-term Sungai Bakap assemblyman Nor Zamri Latiff died after over a month of being warded at the intensive care unit of the Seberang Jaya Hospital.

He is believed to have died from complications due to gastritis.

He contested the seat in the state election last August and defeated PH’s Nurhidayah Che Rose with a majority of 1,563 votes.

PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli announced Joohari as the anointed PH candidate.

Joohari was born in Permatang Pasir, is a Penang Free School old boy, and graduated from a local university.

He was a principal at many schools in Nibong Tebal. – June 13, 2024.
