THE Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) is doubling its efforts to preserve and hopefully increase the population of the Sarawak Red Langur, one of the critically endangered primates that is found only in Sarawak.
SFC has entered into a joint programme with Yayasan Sime Darby to fund conservation of the rare primate found only in the Maludam National Park now.
Maludam is located in southern Sarawak about 130kms from Kuching.
SFC and Yayasan Sime Darby signed a deal to help organise education awareness programmes and to get local communities to conserve the national park and its surroundings while promoting sustainable ecotourism.
SFC general manager Abang Arabi Amran said the corporation welcomes efforts from all sectors to help conserve the Red Langur.
"As is already known, the Sarawak Red Langur is found only here and the species is listed as critically endangered.
"We are hopeful that we can preserve the species through greater collaboration efforts from the communities.
"Our aim is always to ensure that our wildlife are protected as much as we can," he said.
The Red Langur is a protected animal. No hunting or capturing is allowed.
