A SPECIAL programme will be introduced to allow Class B1 and B2 licences to be automatically upgraded to Class B by October, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke.

He said the public could apply for this starting from October 1.

“The Road Transport Department is in the final phase of rolling out the programme, including implementing system changes and coordinating with driving schools.”

“This programme does not have an expiry date and will be continued until a date to be announced later,” he told the press at his office today.

B2 driving licences are for motorcycles not exceeding 250cc, and B class licences are for those exceeding 500cc.

Loke said holders must meet some conditions for the automatic upgrade.

He said one condition was that individuals actively held B1 or B2 licences for a continuous period of 10 years.

“This is to ensure riding competency and experience in an individual before transitioning to higher-powered bikes,” he said.

Loke said other conditions were that an applicant must settle all current summonses, must not have been convicted of any offence, and must not have been placed on any blacklist.

The minister said licence holders must self-declare the current state of their health.

He said applicants must attend and pass a two-hour transition programme at driving schools.

Loke said a qualified training officer at a driving school must also verify the licence holder’s ability to operate a high-powered motorcycle.

A fee of RM160 will be charged to cover the driving institutes’ operational costs. – August 2, 2024.
