A MOTORCYCLIST died while his friend was injured after the motorcycle they were riding was involved in an accident with a sports utility vehicle (SUV) on Jalan Salim in Sibu, last night.
Sibu District Police Chief ACP Azari Miskon said that in the incident at around 11.15 pm, the 19-year-old victim suffered serious injuries and was confirmed dead while receiving treatment at Sibu Hospital at 12.24 am.
According to him, the accident involved a Lexus RX350 SUV driven by a 25-year-old local man and a Yamaha 135LC motorcycle ridden by the victim with a 19-year-old male pillion rider.
He said initial investigations found that the Lexus was travelling from the Sibu town centre towards Salim before it is believed to have lost control and skidded into the opposite lane and collided with a motorcycle.
“As a result of the accident, the motorcyclist suffered serious injuries and was confirmed dead while receiving treatment at the Sibu Hospital.
“The motorcycle pillion rider also suffered injuries and is receiving further treatment at the Sibu Hospital,” he said.
Azari said the Lexus driver involved underwent an initial urine test and was found to be positive for Methamphetamine.
Following that, he said, the suspect was arrested, and a remand application will be made on June 8 to assist further investigations.
“The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987,” he added. – June 7, 2026
