THE lorry driver involved in an accident with 11 other vehicles at the Persiaran Mokhtar Dahari traffic light junction in Alam Budiman, Shah Alam, on Friday evening has tested positive for drugs.
Shah Alam District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Sarudin Samah stated that a urine screening conducted on the 51-year-old man returned a positive result for amphetamines/methamphetamine.
"The man has been detained to assist with the investigation under Section 44(1A)(a) of the Road Transport Act 1987," he said in a statement on Saturday.
The lorry driver is expected to be remanded at the Shah Alam Court today.
Sarudin stated that preliminary investigations revealed the lorry driver claimed to have experienced brake failure before losing control while driving downhill from Puncak Perdana towards Puncak Alam at approximately 4:20 pm.
He said the lorry veered into the opposite lane and collided with 11 vehicles that were stopped at the Alam Budiman three-way traffic light junction.
In the incident, a 58-year-old man driving a Subaru XV SUV sustained severe head injuries and is currently receiving treatment in the red zone at UiTM Puncak Alam Hospital.
His wife, 53, and their 17-year-old grandson, who were also in the same vehicle, are receiving treatment at the hospital and are reported to be in stable condition.
Another victim, a 29-year-old man driving a Perodua Myvi, sustained bodily injuries and is also reported to be in stable condition.
