SARAWAK DAP chairman and Stampin Member of Parliament Chong Chieng Jen has made a call in Parliament for Sarawak to be exempted from any increase in RON 95 petrol prices.

Chong, who is also Sarawak Pakatan Harapan chairman, raised the issue during his debate in the Dewan Rakyat.

"Sarawak should not be affected by any RON95 subsidy rationalisation being planned by the Federal Government, instead the price of fuel in Sarawak should be lowered.

"A lower pump price at the petrol stations in Sarawak is justifiable by the fact that Sarawakians in general are still having lower income.

"Though Sarawak is an oil and gas producing state with plenty of revenue, the general population is still struggling.

He said the wealth of the state has not benefited the ordinary people much.

"The general population cannot be burdened by any fuel price increase," he said.

The Federal Government is planning to reduce RON 95 subsidies in the middle of next year.

Diesel subsidies had already been reduced.

However, Sarawak and Sabah are still enjoying subsidised diesel after Putrajaya exempted the two Borneo states from the diesel price adjustment last year. - November 6, 2024
